The general picture from the research is reassuring: knuckle cracking in itself does not appear to damage the joints or cause arthritis, even over decades.
Habitual Back and Neck Self-Cracking
Self-cracking the back or neck sits in a similar place, with a few sensible caveats. For most people, the occasional self-adjustment of a stiff back is harmless and the loosening that follows is real, if usually short-lived. The catch is that the relief tends not to last, which can turn into a habit of cracking the same spot again and again throughout the day in pursuit of a feeling that keeps fading.
Where caution is warranted is with forceful, repeated wrenching of the neck or back, particularly the neck, which is best not yanked aggressively. And if the urge to crack is driven by persistent pain, or if the cracking is accompanied by swelling, locking, or a recent injury, that is a reason to have it looked at by a registered chiropractor, physiotherapist, or doctor rather than to keep self-manipulating. Painless, occasional cracking with no other symptoms, on the other hand, is generally nothing to be concerned about.

The reassuring summary is that joint sounds, on their own, are usually meaningless. A spine and a set of joints that click and pop as they move through the day, without pain or other symptoms, are doing nothing abnormal, and there is no need to chase the noises away or worry about them.
The signals worth paying attention to are the ones that travel with the sound rather than the sound itself.
